Australia has picked an initial 18-man roster for the One-Day International World Cup. While Aaron Hardie, Tanveer Sangha, and Nathan Ellis have made the team, Marnus Labuschagne has been left out.
The 18-man group will initially play five One-Day Internationals (ODIs) in South Africa before heading to India for three more ODIs before the World Cup.
It was also reported that allrounder Glenn Maxwell will miss the ODI series in South Africa due to family obligations and will instead join the squad in India. Pat Cummins, who injured his wrist in the final Ashes Test, will join the squad in South Africa for the ODI series to prepare for the India tour.
“Pat injured his left wrist diving in the field on the first day at The Oval,” Selectors Chair George Bailey explained. “He has an undisplaced left radius fracture that will require six weeks of rehabilitation.” We anticipate him joining the squad during the South African One-Day International Series. We see Pat’s forced rest as a good ahead of this crucial World Cup campaign. There are still a handful of games he may play before the World Cup that will provide him with a solid preparation.”
Prior to the ODIs, Australia will play a three-match T20I series against South Africa, with the major players rested. Mitchell Marsh will captain the second-string group, which will be missing Starc, Hazlewood, Warner, Cummins, and Green.
Hardie, who has been included to the ODI team, has also been named to the T20 squad. South Australian Spencer Johnson and Victorian Matt Short also make their debuts in the national squad, while Jason Behrendorff is called up for the first time since the 2022 Pakistan trip.
“Mitch has long been a senior player within the white ball structure, and this is an opportunity for him to add to his leadership skills at the international level,” Bailey explained. “We are excited for him to take that step in South Africa.” Aaron, Spencer, and Matt have all performed admirably in the BBL and have been regarded as possible future national players.
“Aaron has impressed in recent appearances for Australia A and the Scorchers, while Matt has thrived with increased responsibility at the top of the order for the Strikers.” Spencer’s left-arm speed and bounce were quite efficient in his rookie season with the Heat. This trip will be a tremendous experience for all three, as well as their first opportunity to play for their country.”
