David Willey to retire from international cricket after World Cup 2023

England’s David Willey, who was overlooked during the ECB’s yearly contractual procedure for 2023-24, is expected to retire from all international cricket at the end of the ongoing 2023 World Cup in India. Willey, 33, is the only current England World Cup squad player who has not been offered a core contract for the forthcoming season, as reported last week.

“I never wanted this day to come,” Willey said in a social media statement on Wednesday (November 1), revealing his decision. “I’ve always wanted to play cricket for England since I was a kid.” So, after considerable thinking and consideration, I feel the time has come for me to retire from all forms of international cricket at the conclusion of the World Cup.

“I’ve worn the shirt with great pride and given my all to the badge on my chest.” I’ve been extremely fortunate to be a member of such a fantastic white ball squad with some of the top players in the world. Along the road, I’ve made some wonderful memories and made some wonderful friends, as well as been through some really painful moments.

“To my wife, two children, mother and father, without your sacrifice and unwavering support throughout, I would not have been able to pursue my dreams.” Thank you for sharing wonderful memories with me and picking up the pieces when I’ve fallen apart – I’ll be eternally thankful.”

Champions from the previous season England is currently at the bottom of the table after five defeats in six games, and they are only mathematically alive in the competition. Willey has stated that he will “give my everything and more” in the final three group stage matches against Australia, the Netherlands, and Pakistan.

“I believe I have a lot more to give on and off the field while still playing my best cricket, and my decision has nothing to do with our World Cup performance.” “I’m confident that everyone who knows me believes that, whatever my involvement in the remainder of this campaign, I will give my all and more,” he stated. “That’s the only way I know.”

Willey, on the other hand, stated that he will continue to play for franchises and domestic sides in the shorter forms (T20 and the Hundred). Willey captained Northamptonshire in the T20 Blast last year and also played in the Hundred for Welsh Fire. In January, he will play for the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in the second edition of the ILT20. Willey is currently under contract with Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL.
