Australia captain Pat Cummins has explained how his squad built a lasting legacy in a year that saw them retain the Ashes and win two global trophies.
After a tough six months on the road in India and England, Pat Cummins believes his squad has established a career-defining legacy with their World Cup victory.
After days of festivities in India, Cummins and other Australian players began returning home on Wednesday morning.
Seven players of the squad have remained in India to compete in the upcoming Twenty20 series, while the other half have returned to prepare for the upcoming Test season.
Australia’s victory came after spending two months in India earlier this year, followed by two months in England for the Ashes, with only brief respite before the World Cup.
After retaining the Ashes on foreign soil and losing a 2-1 Test series in India, they have won the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup this year.
“I think they have created their own legacy,” Cummins said as he landed at Sydney Airport.
“You only get one World Cup every four years, and playing somewhere like India is difficult.”
“It doesn’t get any better than competing against the rest of the world and coming away with a medal.”
“There’s also an away Ashes series and a World Test Championship.” We couldn’t have asked for a better outcome. So a really happy bunch.”
Cummins said he was still “buzzing” from the victory, which came after a six-wicket victory over the host nation in the final on Sunday.
