The Sydney Sixers are set to strongly appeal against the Tom Curran verdict

Tom Curran, an England pace bowler currently representing the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League, has been imposed a four-match suspension for intimidating an umpire, a level-3 offence according to Cricket Australia’s code of conduct. Conversely, the Sixers have declared their intention to “vigorously appeal” the penalty.

The occurrence transpired prior to the commencement of the Sixers’ preceding match against the Hobart Hurricanes in Launceston on December 11. As per CA’s account, Curran was endeavoring to finish a run-up exercise on the pitch in preparation for the pre-match routines of the teams. Curran was prevented from entering the field by the fourth umpire’s intervention, which precipitated the altercation.

“The umpire took position next to the stumps, blocking Curran from approaching the pitch and gestured to Curran to move away from the pitch,” a CA statement read. “Curran was seen in the footage gesturing to the umpire to move away from the pitch. Curran then attempted to perform a practice run-up and run at pace straight towards the umpire who stood in the bowling crease facing Curran. The umpire stepped to his right to avoid the risk of collision.”

Bob Parry, the match referee, cited Curran with “intimidation or attempted intimidation of an umpire, match referee, or medical personnel during a match, whether by language or conduct (including gestures)” in violation of article 2.17 of the code of conduct. Curran, despite contesting the allegation, was convicted of the offense and subsequently received four suspension points, equivalent to four missed BBL games.

It was subsequently announced that the Sixers would appeal the sanction. “Tom and the club maintain that Tom did not knowingly or intentionally intimidate a match official, and on legal advice, we will exercise our right to appeal the decision,” Rachael Haynes, the Head of Sixers said. “We will support Tom during this period and look forward to him returning to the field.”
