On Thursday in Trinidad, the West Indies concluded their recent resurgence with a series-clinching four-wicket victory over England in the fifth and final Twenty20 International.
The Caribbean side won their third consecutive Twenty20 International series, following victories against South Africa and India in 2023. This achievement further strengthens their position less than six months before they jointly host the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 with the USA.
The five-match series was marked by numerous ups and downs, with Thursday’s match being a particularly unremarkable one. With only four deliveries remaining, the West Indies chased down England’s total of 132 to secure a 3-2 series victory.
Shai Hope’s immaculate 43* was the deciding factor in the hosts’ dramatic victory; the powerful right-hander lofted Chris Woakes of England over the point and into the stands.
Hope’s experience was crucial during the chase as England steadily took wickets to maintain pressure on the home side. When Sam Curran removed the dangerous Andre Russell with the penultimate delivery of the 19th over, it appeared that the reigning T20 World Cup champions had a chance when they were given an opportunity.
However, Jason Holder (4*) and Hope maintained composure to ensure that the enthusiastic home audience departed with grins on their faces from the Brian Lara Cricket Academy venue.
Player of the Match was awarded to West Indies spinner Gudakesh Motie for his three wickets during England’s innings, whereas Player of the Series was given to batsman Phil Salt for his two centuries and 331 runs for the tourists.
