Mahedy Hasan, an all-rounder for Bangladesh, stated on Wednesday that his team wants to create history in the current three-match T20Is New Zealand. This is because they defeated the Kiwis in their own backyard to achieve their first-ever victory in the shortest format.
On Wednesday, Bangladesh achieved a historic five-wicket victory over New Zealand, reaching 137-5 in 18.4 overs after bowling together to limit the opposition to 136.
The tourists won their first T20 match on New Zealand soil four days after defeating the Black Caps in their first away one-day international match in Napier, after nine straight losses.
Bangladesh’s next two matches are scheduled to take place on Mount Maunganui, where in 2022 they won their first Test match against New Zealand in their home backyard.
“We are ahead in the series and we have good memories of Mount Maunganui. We won a Test match there and we will be having a good chance in the T20s,” Mahedy, who picked the man of the match award following his all-round performance told reporters after the game in Napier.
“When you win, the confidence is good both as a player and as a team and now we are going to another venue to win and for that, we need to adapt to the conditions as soon as possible,” he said.
“Pacers are doing well and everyone’s performance is important behind a win, it’s not on the back of one or two cricketers’ performance. Both the spinners and the pacers did well so we could restrict them to a small total and could manage to win the game,” he said.
“When the bowlers do well, it helps the team as it grows confidence. In the last game, the bowling unit bowled very well and bowlers know that in this condition, they have to come up with smart bowling and all of whom bowled did well for us,” he said.
Mahedy added that Liton Das guided him in the middle with the bat that helped them stitch an unbeaten 40-run stand and helped his team clinch the historic win.
“As Liton was batting for long time, he had a good understanding regarding the wicket and we needed a small partnership to win the game. We had a partnership but we lost two to three wickets in quick span of time at that point. Liton told me to be positive and play my natural game and we will see what can be done in the last two overs,” he said.
“Chasing the runs quickly was possible in this kind of a wicket, and more so the runs they scored could be chased quickly, but the momentum can change quickly as we were in front initially while they turned the table in the middle overs and we came back good at the end. The momentum will change in the course of a game and that is natural,” he added.
