Facing the aftermath of a rare Test defeat at home, India is grappling with mounting pressure. The absence of Virat Kohli in the upcoming game intensifies their challenges, especially after KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja were sidelined due to injury setbacks on Monday.

Jadeja’s hamstring injury during Day 4 of the Hyderabad Test and Rahul’s complaint of right quadriceps pain further compound India’s woes. With the drawing board as their only refuge, the selection committee has enlisted domestic sensation Sarfaraz Khan, left-arm spinner Sourabh Kumar, and off-spinning all-rounder Washington Sundar to bolster the squad.

In the absence of Kohli, Rahul, who was the most seasoned batsman in the middle order, played a pivotal role in the first innings with a score of 87. His fourth afternoon dismissal contributed to a dramatic collapse leading to England’s narrow 28-run victory.

While Rajat Patidar is already in the squad and has showcased promising temperament in white-ball cricket, questions loom over the Indian batsmen’s proficiency against spin. This raises the possibility of Sarfaraz earning a chance, given his skills in handling spin, despite facing challenges against genuine pace and bounce.

For Jadeja’s replacement, left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav is an existing option, offering a record of confounding batsmen with his variations. However, concerns about India’s batting depth might lead the selectors towards the untested but experienced first-class performer Sourabh Kumar. His inclusion could add variety to the spin arsenal, complementing Axar Patel’s left-arm spin already in the XI.

Another option is Sundar, known for his all-round capabilities in white-ball cricket. While his Test record includes impressive batting performances, his wicket-taking ability is yet to reach its potential. The team management’s determination to play the spin card might favor Kuldeep, who has a history of delivering in pressure situations.

The batting dilemma revolves around choosing between Sarfaraz’s prolific domestic form and Patidar’s promising but limited first-class experience, despite a lower average. As India faces this crucial decision, the selectors hope that the chosen specialist batsmen can amass enough runs to turn the tide in their favor.
