Mumbai Indians
Mumbai Indians, who have triumphed in the IPL on five separate occasions, will undoubtedly be bolstered by the captaincy return of all-rounder Hardik.
The Indians have not won the trophy since 2020, and they will be eager to return to the circle of champions in 2024 after falling short of a spot in the final of the previous year in the final qualifier against Gujarat.
Chennai Super Kings
Chennai Super Kings, who tied the record with Gujarat for the fifth IPL championship by five wickets in the 2023 championship match, will undoubtedly be formidable opponents once more.
In addition to being crowned champions in 2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021, the Super Kings have finished in second place five times, most recently in 2019.
Gujarat Titans
Gujarat Titans have established themselves as an IPL franchise with an impressive start, having won the championship in their inaugural season of 2022 and advancing to the final once more in 2023.
While the Titans will be hoping for a second championship in 2024, they will be without the inspirational captain, Hardik Pandya, due to his return to the Mumbai Indians.
Lucknow Super Giants
Similar to Gujarat Super Giants, Lucknow Super Giants advanced to the play-offs in their first two IPL seasons (2022 and 2023).
Under the leadership of former Australia coach Justin Langer, the Super Giants will be optimistic that their first IPL championship is imminent.
Royal Challengers Bangalore
Narrowly missing out on the play-offs in 2023, Royal Challengers Bangalore are still chasing a first IPL title after losing in the final in 2009, 2011 and, most recently, 2016.
They will be hoping that 2024 is their year and the arrival of Australia all-rounder Cameron Green from Mumbai Indians should boost their chances.
Rajasthan Royals
Winners of the inaugural season of the IPL in 2008, Rajasthan Royals have only returned to the final once since then, losing to Gujarat in the 2022 showpiece.
The Royals narrowly missed out on the play-offs last year and they have retained England’s white-ball captain Jos Buttler but released his international team-mate Joe Root.
Sunrisers Hyderabad
Since 2023, when they bolstered the IPL standings, Sunrisers Hyderabad have failed to advance to the play-offs in each of the previous three seasons.
Nevertheless, a coaching change may be able to improve their situation; Daniel Vettori, a former New Zealand all-rounder, has been appointed in place of Brian Lara.
Delhi Capitals
IPL 2023 saw only one team with a worse record than Delhi Capitals, but the return of captain Rishabh Pant, who was sidelined in a severe car accident last season, can only increase their chances of improvement.
Despite having been a consistent participant since the tournament’s inception in 2008, the Capitals have yet to secure an IPL championship. In 2020, they were defeated by the Mumbai Indians by five wickets in their sole final appearance.
Kolkata Knight Riders
Kolkata Knight Riders, who finished second in 2021, have not advanced to the play-offs since that season. It has been a decade since they were last crowned champions in 2024.
The Knight Riders will undoubtedly benefit from the return of Shreyas Iyer, who was incapacitated with a back injury during the 2023 IPL; he will also serve as team captain for this campaign.
Punjab Kings
The omens are not good for Punjab Kings, as they have only twice made it to the play-offs in 16 IPL seasons and they have not done so since reaching their only final in 2014.
There is a strong English contingent in the Kings ranks, with Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran and Liam Livingstone on their list of retained players, while former England coach Trevor Bayliss will once again lead the side.
