The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has arranged a multi-day women’s competition in Pune beginning March 29. This highly anticipated event will include teams from six zones (East, West, North, South, Central, and Northeast) competing in a series of five matches.
The competition presumably comes soon after the current Women’s Premier League (WPL), which ends on March 17.
The competition will begin with two quarterfinals on March 29, 30, and 31, followed by two semifinals, which are expected to be played concurrently on April 5, 6, and 7. Finally, the competition will culminate with the grand finale, which is scheduled for April 9, 10, and 11. However, the identities of the two teams who have been directly seeded for the semifinals are yet to be revealed.
This three-day event promises to be a key test for both the top female cricketers and the BCCI itself. It will be a litmus test to see if the BCCI can successfully encourage players to participate in domestic competitions, similar to the board’s efforts to ensure that male players prioritize domestic events like the Ranji Trophy as much as IPL and international cricket.
Indian women have lately played a few red ball internationals (read Tests), and it is clear that the BCCI intends to establish a domestic platform for multi-day contests for female cricketers.
