Jason Roy, the opening batsman for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), was penalized 10% of his match fee for violating the IPL Code of Conduct during Wednesday’s play at M Chinnaswamy Stadium against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). IPL issued a statement on Wednesday stating that Kolkata Knight Riders batsman Jason Roy had been fined 10% of his match fee for violating the IPL Code of Conduct during the IPL 2023 match against Royal Challengers Bangalore at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
The KKR opener put together a solid 56 runs in 29 balls but was angry when he was dismissed and broke the IPL Code of Conduct by hitting one of the bails with the bat.
“Mr. Roy acknowledged to the Level 1 violation of IPL Code of Conduct Article 2.2. The Match Referee’s judgment is decisive and binding for Level 1 Code of Conduct violations, according to the IPL statement.
In the match, KKR defeated RCB to earn a much-needed victory after suffering four straight defeats.
KKR reached 200/5 thanks to a scorching 56(29) from Jason Roy and an aggressive 48 off 21 from captain Nitish Rana. As KKR held RCB to 179/8 and triumphed by 21 runs, Varun Chakaravarthy (3/27) and Suyash Sharma (2/30) weaved a web around the RCB batters.
Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis, the team’s openers, launched an immediate assault as RCB began chasing 201. Vaibhav Arora’s opening delivery, which Kohli sliced to third man for a four, was followed by du Plessis’ flick of a ball wide of short fine leg. After that, the pair went after Umesh Yadav, smashing 19 off the over thanks to Kohli’s four-yard blast over extra cover and du Plessis’ two sixes to end it.
Suyash Sharma was introduced into the attack by Nitish Rana as early as the third over, and the youthful spinner heeded his captain’s order by taking out du Plessis (17 off 7), caught at long-on and conceding only three runs for the over.
Suyash provided a couple of fours for Kohli to keep the momentum going, but in the next over, the young bowler recovered and trapped Shahbaz Ahmed LBW to make it 51/2. Glenn Maxwell, who was in fine form and had been hammered for a four off the previous ball by the RCB batsman, was then caught at mid-off by Chakaravarthy, dealing a major blow to the team. As they reached 58/3 after the first six over, it was the first time this season that RCB had lost three wickets in the Powerplay.
Mahipal Lomror increased the scoring after three relatively calm overs, smashing two sixes off Sunil Narine to bring the total to 96/3 at the halfway point.
Kohli then needed 33 balls to reach fifty. A further six was hammered by Lomror (34 off 18) off Chakaravarthy, but the crafty spinner returned to catch him at deep square leg with the ensuing delivery. The big one, Kohli (54 off 37), was beautifully caught at deep mid-wicket by Venkatesh Iyer off Russell, and the RCB lost another player in the following over. Iyer ran to his left and made a fantastic low diving catch after Kohli pushed it forcefully to deep midwicket.
Suyash Prabhudessai and Dinesh Karthik scored a quick 22 runs in just 16 balls, but a mix-up between them caused Prabhudessai to leave in the 15th over as Suyash Sharma wrapped up an amazing performance of 4-0-30-2 with just six runs conceded in his last over.
Andre Russell bowled a solid over, giving up just eight runs and getting the wicket of Hasaranga with 56 needed off of 24 balls. Then, Chakaravarthy made an important breakthrough when he caught Karthik (22 off 18) at deep mid-wicket. He had a great over of bowling, giving up just four runs and finishing with 4-0-27-3.
It was always going to be a challenge to get 44 off 12, and the home team only managed 22 as KKR won the game by 21 runs.
