Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the rest of the IPL 2023 due to a hamstring injury, according to his Sunrisers Hyderabad team on Thursday (April 27).
Washington appeared in each of the team’s seven games in the first half of the competition, and after going wicketless in the first six games, he claimed three wickets in an over for returns of 3 for 24 against the Delhi Capitals in the team’s most recent match. In that encounter in Hyderabad, the 23-year-old also hit a quick 15-ball 24*, his highest score of the season, but was unable to prevent his side’s third consecutive loss.
With a 2-5 record, the 2016 champions are presently ninth in the standings. They will face the Capitals again on April 29 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, and will have to mount a comeback without the all-around balance that Washington brings.
This is the latest in a long line of misfortunes for the Tamil Nadu cricketer. He recently injured his left shoulder after hitting severely on it while playing for Lancashire in a Royal London One-Day Cup game, forcing him to miss the trip of Zimbabwe. Last February, he experienced a similar hamstring issue that forced him to miss T20Is at home against the West Indies, and he then missed a number of games for SRH due to a hand ailment.
He suffered a finger injury when fielding for a County team in a warm-up game against India at Chester le Street in 2021, just after his achievements in the Gabba Test against Australia and the Ahmedabad Test against England. It forced him to miss the Test series against England, the second half of the IPL, and the T20 World Cup in the UAE.
