Cricketer-turned-commentator Simon Doull from New Zealand thinks that Rohit Sharma will be freed up if he steps down as captain of the Mumbai Indians. This is something Sharma needs, as the veteran of the IPL continues to struggle to get runs this season. Rohit Sharma may have tried everything – giving himself a longer run, dropping to number three, not playing in one game, and coming in as an impact player – but nothing seems to work.
Even though his team got off to a bad start this season and is now on the verge of making the playoffs, which seemed impossible at first, Rohit’s fans are aware of his drop in form.
Doull, who got in trouble before for criticizing the strike rates of two top players (Virat and Babar), has again said something bold about Rohit Sharma’s future as MI captain.
As a Cricbuzz expert, Doull said that Rohit should give up the captaincy because he already leads India in two different forms.
“I thought it was a good idea for him [Virat Kohli] to step down as captain of RCB, just like I do with Rohit now that he is captain of India. “I just think this is the tournament where he needs to be free and just play,” Doull said on Cricbuzz, as reported by India Today.

Doull explained what he meant by saying that Rohit should follow Kohli’s example and quit being captain because he deserves to play easily and score runs.
Faf du Plessis, a former South African captain, took Kohli’s place. Together, the two of them caused a lot of trouble this season, scoring more than 800 runs at the top.
“When I spoke about Virat and the captaincy, it seemed like he was under constant pressure. The RCB captaincy, the Indian captaincy in three different forms, and just to see it taken away—it was never going to someone he wouldn’t respect. Thus, only two or three players in international cricket could have traveled to Bangalore and served as captain, according to Doull.
Rohit has only scored 257 runs in 13 games this season, averaging 19.77 and using a 131.12 strike rate. With 14 points from 13 games and a current standing of fifth, MI can only advance to the playoffs by winning their at-home final league encounter versus SunRisers Hyderabad.
