The Delhi Capitals have hired South African fast bowler Lizaad Williams as a substitute for Harry Brook, who withdrew from the IPL 2024 after his grandmother’s death.

Williams has joined Capitals for a basic fee of INR 50 lakh. This will be his debut appearance in the IPL.

Williams will add to the Capitals’ pace attack, which already includes Anrich Nortje, Ishant Sharma, Khaleel Ahmed, Jhye Richardson, and Mukesh Kumar. Mitchell Marsh and Sumit Kumar are two of their pace-bowling allrounders.

Lungi Ngidi was also on the Capitals’ roster, but he withdrew from the event to complete his recovery from a lower-back injury sustained during the SA20 earlier this year.

Williams has 106 wickets in 83 T20s for a bowling average of 19.76. He made his South African debut in April 2022 and has since played two Tests, four One-Day Internationals, and eleven Twenty20 Internationals.

He was a member of South Africa’s 2023 ODI World Cup squad and played one match against Bangladesh.

He got 15 wickets for the Johannesburg Super Kings in the SA20, ending fourth in the wicket-takers list.

Williams’ arrival is timely for the Capitals, as Marsh has a hamstring issue that has sidelined him for at least a week.

The Capitals are now at the bottom of the points table, having lost four of their last five games.
