The injury-related absence of pacer Khurram Shazad from Pakistan’s ongoing Test series against Australia has dealt a setback for the country.
Shazad experienced discomfort in his left side while representing Pakistan in its inaugural ICC World Test Championship match against Australia in Perth. Subsequent examinations identified the right-armer as having sustained a stress fracture in the ribcage and an abdominal muscle injury.
Pakistan released a statement on Thursday that revealed the news, with no timeframe given as to the expected recovery period the 24-year-old faces.
“Khurram Shazad has been ruled out of the Test series against Australia due to a stress fracture in his left 10th rib, as well as an abdominal muscle tear,” the statement read.
“Fast bowler Khurram Shahzad complained of discomfort in his left side during the first Test.
“PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) will now consult a specialist in Australia after which a final management protocol will be established for the player.
“He will then return to the NCA (National Cricket Academy) in Lahore where he will continue his injury management and rehabilitation.”
Shazad’s début was marked by five wickets, including the lopsided dismissal of Steve Smith in both innings of the first Test. His absence will be keenly felt as Pakistan strive to regain momentum in the remaining two Tests, which will be played in Melbourne and Sydney.
Restore quickly Star pacer Naseem Shah is suspended for the tour due to injury. Since Hasan Ali and Mohammad Wasim Jr. are already in Australia and a part of the touring party, they appear to be the most probable replacements.
