Pat Cummins, a prominent Australian fast bowler, has been selected Sunrisers Hyderabad’s captain for the next IPL season 2024. Cummins, 30, takes over for Aiden Markram, as the organization looks to move forward after a dismal last-place finish the previous season.

According to CricAdvisor, Cummins was the favourite to take over as captain after being bought for a hefty INR 20.50 crore at auction. Daniel Vettori, SRH’s new head coach, works alongside Cummins on the Australian national team. Vettori, who was also entrusted with finding a replacement for Dale Steyn (the empty bowling coach position), has selected former national teammate James Franklin to join the coaching staff.

Even though Markram led sister franchise Sunrisers Eastern Cape to back-to-back SA20 titles, SRH’s dismal campaign in 2023, combined with Cummins’ spectacular rise as a leader, necessitated a change in leadership. Under Cummins, Australia won the World Test Championship last year and then defeated India in the ODI World Cup finals.

This will be the Australian’s first tenure as captain of the IPL. Previously, he played for the Kolkata Knight Riders. Even though he didn’t have much success with the ball, Cummins did get a 14-ball fifty, the fastest in IPL history at the time. He was the first player ever to receive an offer of more than INR 20 crore in the auction before being purchased by SRH. KKR promptly broke the record bid by signing Mitchell Starc for INR 24.75 crore.
