Mr and Mrs Mahi, starring Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor, will release on 15 March.

New Delhi: Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions is gearing up to release its latest sports drama, “Mr and Mrs Mahi,” on 15 March 2024. Starring Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor, this cricket-centric film is directed by Sharan Sharma, renowned for his work on “Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl.” The film promises to be a compelling addition to Bollywood’s expanding repertoire of sports stories.

The Indian film industry’s fascination with sports dramas is clear, with a steady stream of releases captivating audiences. Recently, Ranveer Singh brought cricket legend Kapil Dev to life in Kabir Khan’s ’83, while Ajay Devgn is set to inspire as football coach Syed Abdul Rahim in the upcoming “Maidaan.”

Last year, Taapsee Pannu shone as cricketer Mithali Raj in “Shabaash Mithu.” The genre has also seen a surge in women-centric sports films, reflecting real-life stories and the rising popularity of female-led cinema. In March 2021, T-Series released “Saina,” a biopic of badminton champion Saina Nehwal, featuring Parineeti Chopra.

Rajkummar Rao, a Film and Television Institute of India graduate, first caught attention with Dibakar Banerjee’s “Love Sex Aur Dhokha” (2010). His breakthrough came with the biographical drama “Shahid” (2013), directed by Hansal Mehta, which earned him a national award for best actor.

Janhvi Kapoor made her debut in 2018 with the romance “Dhadak,” a Hindi remake of the Marathi film “Sairat.” Her recent projects include “Good Luck Jerry,” a remake of the Tamil film “Kolamaavu Kokila,” and “Mili,” a Malayalam film adaptation of “Helen,” both of which streamed on Disney+ Hotstar.

With “Mr and Mrs Mahi,” Dharma Productions continues to celebrate the intersection of sports and cinema, promising another engaging and inspiring tale for moviegoers.
