The Delhi Capitals (DC) have had an incredible run in the IPL 2023. The David Warner-led side was already on the back foot before the current season began, with usual skipper Rishabh Pant out due to a horrible tragedy on December 30, 2022. DC has fought for momentum since the start of the season, and while they have achieved some impressive wins, they have became the first team to be eliminated this season following two back-to-back defeats in the last week.
Since Ricky Ponting was appointed as the DC head coach before of the 2018 IPL season (when the franchise was known as the Delhi Daredevils), the franchise has performed admirably (reaching the playoffs three times and playing in their first-ever final in 2020). However, Ponting’s team management has been chastised for their team composition, underutilization of important players, and other issues in IPL 2023. As a result, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has proposed Sourav Ganguly as DC’s next head coach.
GANGULY TO BE THE NEXT DC COACH?
“The presence of Sourav Ganguly in the Delhi dugout is significant.” If Dada is given the role of coach as well, I believe he can make a significant difference on this team. Dada understands the psyche of Indian athletes. He knows how to handle a locker room, and Delhi should take advantage of it. “At the time of the toss, Warner stated that his team has begun preparing for the next season, and in this context, it would not be incorrect to see Ganguly in a different role,” Pathan remarked.
Ganguly was a member of the DC setup in IPL 2019 as a team advisor before returning as the Director of Cricket before to IPL 2023. Ganguly has previously captained IPL teams such as the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the now-defunct Pune Warriors (PWI), but has never coached. It will be fascinating to see if the DC team management maintains intact after their poor performance in IPL 2023. If Ponting is fired, Ganguly can be a great replacement.
Only time will tell whether DC will support their under-fire club management or make positive adjustments ahead of the IPL 2024.
