Pucovski bounces back into action, defying a helmet blow setback to resume his batting prowess

Will Pucovski had made a steady return to cricket earlier this season.

Will Pucovski, undeterred by a helmet blow in a 2nd XI game for Victoria, has triumphantly cleared a concussion test, gaining the green light to resume his batting exploits. The heart-stopping incident occurred as the 25-year-old faced South Australian paceman David Grant while attempting a daring hook shot.

Despite making a solid 42 runs, Pucovski initially retired hurt after the incident at Adelaide’s Karen Rolton Oval. However, the cricketing prodigy was soon back in the game, having faced a series of balls and passed the concussion test with flying colors.

A statement from Cricket Victoria confirmed Pucovski’s resilience, stating, “Pucovski passed a concussion test before batting in the nets, where he was given the all-clear to continue playing. He will be monitored throughout the day and the rest of the game.”

This comeback is particularly noteworthy for Pucovski, who returned to cricket this season after a challenging period that included 11 concussions and a hiatus for mental health reasons in 2022. The young batter, widely acknowledged as one of Australia’s best, took a year off before making a remarkable return to the sport.

His cricketing journey has been marked by ups and downs, including a memorable Test debut against India at the SCG, where he dislocated his shoulder after scoring 62 in the first innings. This season, Pucovski has showcased his skills in three Sheffield Shield games, with a top score of 66, and contributed to a tour game for Victoria against Pakistan.

Having spent the previous winter with Weybridge Cricket Club in the Surrey Championship in England, Pucovski demonstrated his prowess by playing 18 matches and amassing 614 runs at an impressive average of 55.82, including a century and four half-centuries.

Despite facing numerous challenges since his debut for Victoria in February 2017, including an incomplete domestic season in 2019-20, Pucovski’s determination and resilience continue to shine as he forges ahead in his cricketing career.
