Shubman Gill on being compared to famous Indian players from the past.

Shubman Gill played down the similarities that fans and experts saw between him and legendary players after his breakthrough year. The young opening batter has been in great form in all three events, and he also has the Orange Cap for the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL).

Over the course of the season, he has scored 851 runs in 15 games. He is the second Indian batter after Virat Kohli to reach 800 runs in a single campaign. His work also includes three centuries, and people have said that he is a once-in-a-generation batsman like Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli because he is so good.

In an interview with ANI, Shubman Gill acknowledged the hard work of the players who came before him, saying:

“The generation that Sachin sir (Tendulkar) sir, Virat (Kohli) bhai, and Rohit Sharma have inspired is unfathomable.” Had we not won the World Cup in 1983, would there have been a Sachin Tendulkar? No. Would I feel as inspired if we hadn’t won the World Cup in 2011? Perhaps, perhaps not. These kinds of legacies are indestructible; they cannot be defined.”

Aside from his success with the franchise, Gill achieved his first set of hundreds in Test and T20I cricket. He also played an important role in Team India’s home ODI, where he became the fourth Indian player to achieve a double-hundred in a 50-over match.

Gill is regarded as an all-rounder for Team India:

The young bowler has a big six months ahead of him as the Men in Blue aim for two major ICC titles: the World Test Championship (WTC) and the ODI World Cup.

Even though he had a rough start to his T20I career, he has become a consistent batsman at the top of the order since his first T20I century against New Zealand.

His IPL 2023 season gives him more credibility than ever, and it’s possible that he’ll be considered for the T20 World Cup 2024 as well, since the management wants to get rid of older players from the T20I squad.
