Heinrich Klaasen’s magnificent 85-run assault assisted Durban Super Giants in defeating MI Cape Town 11 runs in their SA20 2024 campaign opener on January 11 due to inclement weather. After being given the opportunity to bat first, MI amassed a respectable 207/5 total, supported by opening batsman Ryan Rickelton’s 87 and Kieron Pollard’s exceptional at the conclusion. Klaasen, on the other hand, salvaged DSG from peril at 52/3 with a stroke-filled approach before precipitation ended the match prematurely with the hosts ahead by DLS par.
In 51 balls, Rickelton smashed a half-dozen sixes and the same number of boundaries, seizing control from the very beginning of the powerplay. Rassie van der Dussen contributed a mere 24 runs to the 82-run partnership that the Cape Town openers amassed prior to his departure in the eighth over.
Rickelton thereafter continued to lose partners at regular intervals, but kept Cape Town going at nearly 10 runs per over until Keemo Paul bowled him off for 13 short of a century that was deserved. MICT were 150/4 in the sixteenth over at the time. Liam Livingstone enthralled during his brief sojourn, contributing 25 runs off 20 balls with three deliveries into the stands, while captain Pollard smashed a sprightly 31 off 14 deliveries to propel his side to a total of 200+ with his late cameo.
Cape Town received an additional boost when two of their new-ball spinners took wickets during powerplay, reducing Durban to 12/2 in the first ten deliveries of their pursuit. When Klaasen entered the game after the hosts had just lost Paul at the start of the seventh over, he and unblemished opener Matthew Breetzke (39 off 24) scored a rapid 47 runs in just four overs. Breetzke scored 39 runs off 24 balls.
Similarly, Nicholas Pooran and he combined for an additional 41 runs in 3.2 overs, whereas Dwaine Pretorius managed only five during the 34-run partnership for the sixth wicket that brought Durban within striking distance of the target. The middle order superstar overcame a sluggish start to amass fifty off of twenty-five balls, then added thirty-five more in the last ten deliveries he encountered. At the beginning of the death overs, Klaasen’s 35-ball assault, which included eight sixes and four more boundaries, elevated the side to 174/6 before he was dismissed by Rabada. Four balls later, however, precipitation fell, and Durban were discovered to be 11 runs ahead and declared the victors.
