Tim Paine, a former Australia Test captain, has joined the Adelaide Strikers as an assistant coach ahead of the 2019 Big Bash League (BBL) season. Former Australia bowler and Strikers coach Jason Gillespie believes Paine, who resigned from first-class cricket at the end of the last season, can benefit the franchise. “Tim possesses all of the qualities necessary to be an excellent coach.” “The experience he will bring will undoubtedly benefit our players in all aspects of the game and add more positive elements to the way we play,” Gillespie said in an Adelaide Strikers statement on Friday.
Paine is one of the most experienced players in Australian cricket, having played over 400 professional games in his 18-year career.
Paine was also named as an assistant coach for Australia A ahead of their forthcoming series against New Zealand A, which starts next week.
Tim Nielsen, Strikers General Manager, is thrilled that Paine will be joining the team this summer.
“Tim is an excellent addition to our team and will benefit us greatly this season.” Tim, a brilliant keeper and Test level hitter, will be crucial working with our athletes both on and off the field. His capacity to deliver effective, straight feedback is exceptional, and we eagerly await his arrival in Adelaide,” Nielsen added.
Paine captained Australia in 23 of his 35 Tests and appeared 44 times for the Hobart Hurricanes. He ended up scoring over 1,100 runs, with 91 being his best.
Paine resigned as Australian captain in November of last year, following a text-message incident. After a while, the batter stated that he is withdrawing from the game for the sake of his mental health.
