“Perhaps There’s Beef”: Michael Clarke on Mitchell Johnson’s scathing attack on David Warner

Former Australia great Mitchell Johnson stunned the cricket world with his savage attack on David Warner following the latter’s selection for the Test series against Pakistan. Johnson lashed out at the thought of Warner receiving a “hero’s sendoff” with the Pakistan Test series being his final in the format, while also criticizing chief selector Goerge Bailey for including the opening batter in the squad. While Bailey dismissed the speculation, former Australia captain Michael Clarke had some words of his own.

“Not everyone makes it onto every sports team. Not everyone has the best of friends. “Dave is a strong character, Mitch is a strong character, and (they) went hard at each other in the nets,” Clarke explained on Big Sports Breakfast Show.

“I saw that, but I couldn’t sit here and say they were feuding when we played.” Yeah, maybe I’m missing something here because Mitch hasn’t played in years, so maybe there’s beef, I’m not sure.

Clarke confirmed that he was unaware of this earlier, but there appears to be some friction between Johnson and Warner. However, he believed that the former pacer’s “personal attack” on Warner was still inappropriate.

“When you’re in a position like this, if you have an opinion that’s based on what’s best for the team or your experience, go with it.” However, it should never be personal. “I try not to make it personal, and if it comes across that way, you apologize because you don’t want that,” he added.

In his criticism of Warner, Johnson also brought up the ball-tampering issue, questioning how a player involved for such a deed should be given a hero’s sendoff. Johnson even questioned Australia’s choice to include Warner in the Test lineup, citing his dismal history in recent years.
