In January, the ICC Board officially designated a host nation for the 15th ICC Men’s U19 Cricket World Cup 2024.
South Africa will host the ICC Men’s U19 Cricket World Cup 2024 in January, following the confirmation by the ICC Board at its meeting today that Sri Lanka will no longer serve as hosts.
The ICC recently imposed a suspension on Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on account of a violation of its membership responsibilities: specifically, the failure to administer its affairs independently and without interference from the government.
Following the board meeting, it was disclosed that Sri Lanka retains the ability to engage in bilateral and ICC cricket competitions on an international level. Nevertheless, financial oversight of SLC has been transferred to the ICC. Consequently, the U19 event has been relocated to the nation that previously hosted the Women’s U19 T20 World Cup.
The 15th iteration of the U19 men’s World Cup will commence in 2022, subsequent to the previous tournament held in the West Indies, where India successfully retained the title for the fifth consecutive time.
Amidst competition from fifteen other teams, India will be under pressure to perform at their highest level in order to secure the coveted trophy.
A modified tournament structure has been implemented, comprising an additional Super Six phase subsequent to the Group stage, which serves to ascertain the semi-finalists.
Fourteen teams have been organized into four divisions of four participants each. In Group A, defending champions India is accompanied by Bangladesh, Ireland, and the United States. Scotland, England, South Africa, and the West Indies comprise Group B. Group C comprises the countries of Australia, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, whereas Group D comprises Afghanistan, Pakistan, New Zealand, and Nepal.
The tournament, commencing in January, will comprise a total of 41 contests, culminating in the execution of the Final in February.
