“When I played for India in 1999…”: Virender Sehwag Offers Tilak Varma Advice.

Tilak Varma gave Gujarat Titans a scare during Mumbai Indians’ epic pursuit of 234 runs in Qualifier 2 on Friday. He scored 43 runs on 14 pitches.

Tilak Varma, the Mumbai Indians’ top batter, made his IPL debut in 2022. He scored 397 runs in 14 matches in his first season, with an average of 36.09 and a strike rate of 131.02. Varma improved his performance in the IPL 2023, scoring 343 runs in 11 matches at an average of 42.88 and a strike rate of 164.11. During Mumbai Indians’ epic chase of 234 runs in Qualifier 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday, the batsman gave Gujarat Titans a scare. Rashid Khan dismissed the southpaw after he hit 43 runs off 13 balls, keeping GT in control.

Former India opener Virender Sehwag was thrilled with Varma’s performance and offered some suggestions on how he may continue to improve his game. Sehwag recalled his international debut in 1999 and explained what helped him perform better.

“He should concentrate on two things: improving his fitness and identifying the skills he can work on, as well as his mindset.” When you play regular cricket, you generally find that you alter over time. When you are not playing cricket, you must concentrate on your fitness and skills. “He practiced a lot for his shots, just like Suryakumar Yadav,” Sehwag told Cricbuzz.

“Tilak Varma should work on his weaknesses.” It reminds me of when I initially played for India in 1999 and was dismissed by Shoaib Akhtar. The ball hit my bat pad before I could bring it down. So Dada (Sourav Ganguly) urged me to go back and practice against quick bowling so that I would be better equipped. I used to bat in the middle of the order, I had spin, and by the time the fast bowlers arrived, I had already scored a century. Similarly, Tilak Varma must assess his own flaws,” Sehwag added.
