‘Me, weird? I’m not even in the top 10’ – Adam Zampa

Adam Zampa
"I've stood the test of the time due to the fact that I've been able to grow from bad patches and learn what I have to do."

I attribute the passage of time to the fact that I have developed from adversity and acquired the necessary knowledge.”

The discourse commences with Adam Zampa’s insistence that he is more typical than the majority of his colleagues, notwithstanding the persistent characterization of him as “abnormal and uncommon.” Subsequently, an intriguing glimpse into the mind of one of the most captivating cricketers of our era emerges, having recently completed “the most satisfying” one-day international of his professional career.

From the sincerity and simplicity with which he discusses his bowling, as when he states, “He does not need to bowl well to take wickets,” to the profound understanding he possesses regarding the role of cricket in his personal life. Including his conviction that his current endeavors will be rendered inconsequential once he achieves his ultimate goal of operating Airbnb, cultivating his own food, and working as a maintenance man.

EXCERPTS:

I have to start with the one thing you get asked about the most. This whole thing about you being the most different and quirky member of your team. Do you agree with it or do you think you’re always just being yourself

I declare this to be true consistently. I believe that I am the most average member of the squad. I receive strange and uncommon compliments. Nevertheless, this is entirely false. Four individuals on this team will certainly steal the lead in that regard. And occasionally their rankings shift. Currently, it is most likely Sean Abbott. He is the most peculiar.

Ohhh, Sean Abbott? Really?

Yeah yeah, people get like that when they hear his name, but he’s up there. Steve Smith and Marnus. And then Alex Carey. Sometimes Kez (Carey) is No 1. Smithy surprisingly, is never really No 1. He’s usually 2 or 3. It floats around. And those four guys hang out together a lot as well. And they’re weird. Me, I’m not really like weird at all. Nah… hmm…Nah. I think I’m just quite normal. Live a pretty normal life. Cricket’s not everything to me. Definitely in terms of strange, I’m not even in the top 10 of the 15 blokes here in the squad.

So, what is your definition of weird or rare then? Why do you say these guys are weird?

Why do I say those four guys are weird? They are in the top 4, like four of them are either socially awkward, not in a bad way, but just like lot of the time they’re talking to you, guys where’s the story going. Especially Sean. He ends his story with “Mate did you end up finding 50 bucks?” Just strange, yes. Few people say the same thing about me but I don’t understand. But they’re up there, they’re up there.
