Brandon King will captain the weakened WI squad against South Africa.

West Indies
King's appointment comes on the back of Rovman Powell's unavailability for the series

Brandon King has been selected temporary captain of the West Indies for their forthcoming three-match T20I series at home against South Africa. King’s appointment follows Rovman Powell’s unavailability for the series. Powell and several other players are still in India, competing in the Indian Premier League.

Powell and Shimron Hetmyer play for the Rajasthan Royals, while Andre Rusell and Sherfane Rutherford represent the Kolkata Knight Riders. Alzarri Joseph will be unavailable as Royal Challengers Bangalore has already qualified for the playoffs.

Apart from these five players, Cricket West Indies has rested Shai Hope and Nicholas Pooran, even though they will not participate in the playoffs. Shamar Joseph, who has just played one game for the Lucknow Super Giants, has been added to the team and will make his T20I debut after being selected for the World Cup. CWI has also announced that Joseph and Rutherford would be added to the team if RCB and KKR do not make the final.

“We have not played together as a team since the Australia series, but we just completed a very high-intensity training camp in Antigua,” White Ball Head Coach Daren Sammy said. “Now we have the chance to integrate some of our players returning from the IPL and build some momentum as a group going into the World Cup.”

Roston Chase has been appointed as King’s deputy for this season. Chase recently captained the West Indies A team in Nepal while King was away. The three games will be place at Sabina Park in Jamaica on May 23, 25, and 26.

Brandon King (captain), Roston Chase, Alick Athanaze, Johnson Charles, Andre Fletcher, Mathew Forde, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Shamar Joseph, Kyle Mayers, Obed McCoy, Gudakesh Motie, Romario Shepherd, Hayden Walsh.
