Root out to imitate India’s 2019 World Cup success.

World Cup
Joe Root expects his team to apply the lessons they learned in 2019 when they defend their ICC Men's Cricket World Cup title in India later this year.

When England travel to the subcontinent for this year’s 50-over tournament, they will have the opportunity to become just the third team in history to win back-to-back championships. Root was a member of the victorious England squad that won their first World Cup title at home four years ago.

The memories of a thrilling Super Over clash in the 2019 World Cup Final at Lord’s are still fresh in Root’s consciousness, and the star right-hander is expecting to replicate that victory in November against India.

“Having the experience of 2019 and how good that was and how much that meant to the group and for them to go out and get the opportunity to defend it is something we are relishing and really looking forward to,” Root said.

“We are going to have to play some really good cricket, we are going to have to adapt to different conditions and have that consistency that you need so we will see how we go.”

England is one of the teams that have already named a preliminary squad for the six-week tournament, with the defending champions revealing a few surprises by omitting youthful batter Harry Brook and including uncapped pacer Gus Atkinson.
