Mumbai Indians set two IPL records with their 200-run chase against RCB.

Suryakumar Yadav smashed a 35-ball 83 as Mumbai Indians chased down the target of 200 runs against Royal Challengers Bangalore with 21 balls to spare.

In the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match on Tuesday, Mumbai Indians produced a run-chase for the ages, successfully overhauling Royal Challengers Bangalore’s total of 199 runs. Suryakumar Yadav once again demonstrated why he is arguably the best T20 batter, smashing 83 runs off just 35 balls. The Mumbai Indians finished the chase in less than 17 overs. In the process, the Rohit Sharma-led team broke two T20 league all-time records.

IPL season with the most successful 200+ chases

Rohit’s MI is the first team in IPL history to chase down 200-run targets three times in a single season. Previously, Punjab Kings and Chennai Super Kings held the record, having chased 200+ targets twice in 2018 and 2014, respectively.

Mumbai had previously chased 200-plus targets against the Punjab Kings and the Rajasthan Royals.

Winning with more than 200 balls to spare

Suryakumar’s heroics allowed Mumbai Indians to complete the 200-run chase in just 16.3 overs. With 21 balls to spare in the chase, the franchise broke the Delhi Capitals’ record for the quickest run-chase of 200 runs or more.

In 2017, Delhi chased down a 208-run target against the Gujarat Lions with 15 balls to spare. Second on the list were the Punjab Kings, who finished their 201-run chase against the Kolkata Knight Riders with 10 balls to spare in 2010. MI has now surpassed both.

Rohit Sharma, the 2010 MI captain, was overjoyed with the team’s performance, particularly with the bat. The 36-year-old admitted that he has no idea what target is safe in the IPL these days.

“We limited them to less than 200 people.” It was a tremendous effort; it could have been 220 or more. I’m not sure what a safe score is. Over 200 points have been scored in the last four games. The majority of the teams are taking chances, and it is paying off. Batters are taking chances, and 200-plus runs are being chased. “The batters’ mindset is to do something special for the team, and it’s showing,” he said.

With the victory, MI moved up to third place in the IPL 2023 points table.
