‘The goal is to finish higher on the table.’ – Shakib

Tamim Iqbal

Bangladesh is hoping for a great recovery in the 2017 ICC World Cup after a terrible start that saw them lose five games. Bangladesh’s qualifying for the 2025 Champions Trophy is at jeopardy, since the ICC declared that the top seven teams at the end of the league round, along with hosts Pakistan, will qualify for the event.

Bangladesh is now tenth in the league table and will play Pakistan in their next match on October 31 before facing Sri Lanka and Australia. “Apart from the Champions Trophy, finishing higher on the table is a goal,” Shakib said prior of the encounter against Pakistan. “We have fallen short of expectations. If we can still obtain some decent results, we may be content and then think about how we can improve.”

Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hassan met with the Tigers multiple times following their devastating loss to the Netherlands, which effectively ended their slim chances of reaching the semifinals. “We talked about it in our team meetings.” We discussed how to get out of this circumstance. We must demonstrate it in action. When something isn’t working, talk is cheap. “We’ll do it on the ground so everyone can see what we’re doing,” Shakib explained.

“That day (after losing to the Netherlands), we felt bad.” But we must look forward, which everyone attempted to do. We did everything we could to make things better. Our actions have the potential to alter the team’s predicament. We’ve come to compete in the World Cup. Every game is as crucial as it gets. We’ll tackle everything one game at a time. We don’t consider anything other than executing to the best of our abilities.”

Shakib went on to say that each individual will need to develop their own plans to get back into shape, and only then will they be able to produce collective results, which he believes is currently required for them to get over the lean patch. “Only an individual can bring himself back to form,” he said. “You must first perform individually, and then collectively.” It is the individual’s responsibility to motivate himself. I want to do well as well. I’m looking into it.

“Everyone has a unique style of thinking. Some people enjoy discussing their process. Some people wish to chat about their batting technique or thinking. When a batter or bowler does well, they strive to remember what process works best for them. A player who is not performing well would forget the process despite repeating it.”
