Tim Southee, a veteran fast bowler, will join New Zealand’s ICC World Cup squad later this week as he continues to recover from surgery on his fractured right thumb.
Southee cracked a bone in his right thumb while fielding in the fourth One-Day International against England at Lord’s on 15 September. He came home and sought the advice of physicians, who recommended surgery. The 34-year-old will now expect to be totally healthy for the Black Caps’ World Cup opener against England on October 5 in Ahmedabad.
As a precaution, pace-bowler Kyle Jamieson will join the World Cup squad in India this week to prepare, following the recent ODI series in Bangladesh.
Jamieson will not be an official member of the World Cup squad and hence will be unavailable to play in either of the warm-up games scheduled for Friday against Pakistan and Monday against South Africa.
