David Warner will be captain of the Delhi Capitals, and a replacement for Pant has been announced for the IPL 2023: Rishabh Pant is out for the season due to injury, and Warner will fill in for the time being. On Thursday, an official announcement was made in this regard. Sourav Ganguly, Director of Cricket, also confirmed that a decision on Pant’s replacement will be made following the DC training camp.
David Warner will captain the Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2023, with Rishabh Pant ruled out. Warner took over as interim captain was reported as early as January, but Ricky Ponting and the team management are believed to have made the decision with less than two weeks until the tournament. Axar Patel, a highly regarded player with the Delhi Capitals, was also considered for the position.
The all-rounder was one of four players retained by the franchise in the mega auction and served as Pant’s vice-captain in 2022. Patel will serve as the franchise’s vice-captain again this season.
In his first stint, Warner led Delhi to two victories. He has since played for Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he led the team to their only IPL title in 2016. The Australian will now return to the Delhi Capitals in 2022, with the team spending Rs 6.25 crore on him. He returned the favor by leading the team in scoring with 432 runs and five half-centuries.
The 36-year-old Australian is the IPL’s joint-fifth most successful captain. In the tournament, he has led in 69 games, winning 35 of them. He is one of six captains to have won the IPL at least once. Captaincy has never been a hindrance to his batting in the tournament, with 2840 runs scored at a 47.33 average. Overall, he is the league’s leading overseas run-getter.
